Project Description
In this project we immersed ourselves in the world of the Renaissance. Through reading, analyzing, skits, and researching people events and background of the Renaissance, we made a Renaissance faire exhibition where everyone of us was a character (important person or someone made up from common guilds at the time) that interacted with guests. We read chapters from The Mental Floss History of the World as well as doing worksheets about life in the Renaissance and individual research on the characters that we chose for the exhibition.
Reflection
For this project I really enjoyed being able to grow on the knowledge that I already had about the Renaissance. In each class we learned new things that we would have never associated with the Renaissance or where on the timeline of humanity events happened:
In History we were able to study life leading up to the Renaissance, this included learning about the classical period, the middle ages, and the transition to the Renaissance. We were able to contextualize more popular events like the fall of the Roman Empire, or the Plague with other events that happened around that time. By using Mental Floss we could process the timeline in sections and analyse them individually, we also used worksheets to understand more intricate details, for example, exploring the importance of knighthood and just what chivalry was exactly.
In Humanities we mainly researched the characters that we picked at the beginning of the project. This was another way of familiarizing ourselves with the timelines (especially more specifically within the Renaissance era) because different people had characters from completely different centuries and one got to talk to others to find out what happened around the time that their character was active and it was a great way to orient yourself and find contemporaries among the other characters.
In Math we studied different games that were played during the Renaissance. Instead of learning new information about the timeline or details of the Renaissance, we were able to apply what we learned to why and when this game might have been played. We could determine the general demographics of these games by understanding the pieces available or the aim of the game, often times these games were played by the common people.
In Art we had a very interesting take on looking at the Renaissance. We took the meaning of the Renaissance, the rebirth (of new ideas and interest in modeling life after ancient Greeks and Romans), and applied it to different "renaissances" throughout the years. I chose Andy Warhol and the pop art revolution because his unique style and splash of color brought something very modern and revolutionary to art and it was certainly a turning point in the portrayal of art.
